Compare the constructions the sources actually describe

UNISIG’s 2023 German article distinguishes brazed, directly mounted and cartridge-mounted cutting elements. Tungaloy’s product pages name TRI FINE as a directly mounted construction and FINE BEAM and UNIDEX as heads with indexable inserts and guide pads. UNISIG construction discussion · Tungaloy English product page · Tungaloy German product page.

The product pages do not state a publication date. October 7, 2026 is our inspection and publication date, not a launch date. This compares public documentation; we have not tested the products.

What can be compared today

Documented distinctionPractical enquiry
Brazed or replaceable cutting elementsWhich components are serviced or replaced?
Direct mount or cartridgeWhich setting procedure restores the proposed diameter?
Named insert and pad familiesWhich exact parts belong to the offered head?
STS or DTS assemblyWhich tube, connection and fluid circuit are supplied?

The enquiry column is our editorial analysis. It is not a manufacturer specification. A machine integrator’s construction article and a tooling maker’s product catalogue also serve different purposes; their claims do not form a controlled performance comparison.

What the sources cannot rank

The inspected pages do not provide a matched trial establishing which offer has lower cost per accepted hole, better dimensional capability or longer tool life for the same job. Vendor examples and catalogue ranges cannot supply that missing comparison.

Request the proposed head drawing, replacement procedure, inspection record and application trial. Use the same material condition, finished-bore requirement and accounting boundary for each offer. Record setting time, consumables, accepted holes and rejected output together.

This coverage contains no measured ranking or purchase recommendation. For the service comparison, read the brazed versus indexable guide.

The service interval belongs in the comparison

A brazed cutting element, a directly mounted insert and an insert held in a cartridge introduce different replacement and adjustment responsibilities. The UNISIG and Tungaloy descriptions establish available constructions. They do not establish a universal diameter at which every shop should change from one construction to another, or a ranking that holds for all materials.

The useful comparison follows a particular head through use and service. Which elements are replaced? Which locating surfaces remain? Who checks the restored cutting diameter and the condition of the guiding surfaces? Those are editorial purchasing questions, rather than additional performance findings from the catalogues.

Do not combine the purchase price of one head with the service life reported for a different head or application. Record the actual head code, cutting elements, service action and accepted output over that interval. This provides a defensible input to the accepted-hole cost tool below.

The circuit sketch explains the common BTA fluid and chip paths; it does not depict every cartridge mounting. Continue to the tooling overview for construction choices and the wear guide for the evidence to retain when a head returns from service.
