MAPAL’s second-generation MEGA-Deep-Drill-Alu combines revised cutting geometry, cooling and cutting-material options for deep drilling in aluminium. In its July 15 AMB announcement, the company said the tool would enter the standard programme from September 2026, with lengths from 15×D to 40×D and diameters of 3–16 mm depending on length.

This report reviews that announced programme and the current product description. July 15 is the original source date; September is the stated programme timing. Neither establishes stock availability in a particular market.

The aluminium range and cooling proposal

The second-generation product page lists 15×D, 20×D, 25×D, 30×D and 40×D versions. MAPAL describes configurable coatings for AlSi1–AlSi12 alloys, suitability for minimum quantity lubrication and a geometry with four margin lands. Its German product description uses the corresponding term Minimalmengenschmierung, or MMS.

Cooling is central to MAPAL’s account of the redesign. The manufacturer links enlarged channels to wear behaviour, chip evacuation and process stability. Those are product claims; the page does not provide a matched production trial from which to calculate a general tool-life gain.

Read diameter and length together

The length qualification in the original announcement is consequential. A family range ending at 16 mm and 40×D does not establish that a 16 mm, 40×D tool is part of the programme. An application comparison needs the specific tool entry, alloy and cooling arrangement.

For readers tracking aluminium deep-hole machining, the news is a revised tool programme with material and coolant options. Our editorial assessment is that the next useful evidence would be a documented component trial linking the selected variant to hole quality and accepted output. The published range alone cannot settle that comparison.
